Abstract

This paper honours the ideas of József Nagy on education through the arts that are relevant and inspiring for the field till the present day. He was aware of the shift of visual art education from drawing instruction to teaching a wide range of genres of visual culture and classics as well as contemporary arts. In his works, he emphasized the role of the arts in the development of personal and communicative competence and improvement of social equality. He never considered the arts as an educational frill, and supported skills research in this field. The relevance of his ideas will be shown through a brief overview of research on visual communication, environmental and design education and arts-based social interventions in Hungary.
