Three Hungarians by the Baltic Sea The Baltic Sea and Gdańsk in the Eyes of György Somlyó, Tibor Pethő and Péter Ruffy

Abstract

A good proof that Poland was an object of interest to Hungarian writers and journalists in the period following World War 2 are a few travelogues and reports: A Visztula sellője (The Siren of Vistula, 1954) by György Somlyó, A Kárpátoktól a Balti-tengerig (From the Carpathians to the Baltic Sea, 1956) by Tibor Pethő and Varsói hajnal (A Dawn in Warsaw, 1961) by Péter Ruffy. The goal of the study is to show, how the three aforementioned Hungarian authors perceive the Baltic Sea and its role in the new, socialist Poland, what impact the most important polish coastal city, Gdańsk, had on them.
