Abstract

The role of József Nagy in the ongoing methodological renewal of Hungarian empirical research in education is beyond question. In this paper, we review the research trends that have significantly shaped the methodology in Hungarian skills studies and summarize the methodological changes in research conducted under József Nagy since the 1960s, with a focus on the systematization and measurement of skills and the exploration of the processes of skills development and a stress on relevant developments today. Among skills studies, the study and development of cognitive skills, which facilitate thinking, cognition and the application of knowledge, have played and continue to play a key role, not least because of their role in determining success in learning. Research shows that the development of all skills and competences, even thinking skills, take a number of years - indeed, as many as 5-10 years - and that the most sensitive period for development is the school years. This period calls for the direct development of such skills in school.
