Teaching Lexicography and Dictionary Use at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church (Department of English Linguistics) in Hungary

Abstract

Dictionaries have long been recognised as an essential learning resource, when learning languages. We can find many specialised and user-friendly dictionaries in the market. Problems may arise when teachers and learners do not know how to use these materials to assist learning. This study shows how dictionary skills can be integrated into the English syllabus and taught explicitly in class. In addition, it discusses the state of dictionary culture and dictionary pedagogy in Hungary by analysing the National Core Curriculum from this point of view. We are not born knowing how to use dictionaries well, therefore students need to gain this knowledge and these skills at school in order to use their dictionary effectively. The tough challenges presented by the inadequate dictionary culture and the inability of teachers to integrate dictionary pedagogy in the everyday teaching are clearly visible. The study demonstrates the use of dictionary worksheets and other activities in order to overcome the above-mentioned problems. It will also look at ways to help teachers to train their students how to use a dictionary. Training in dictionary use can help students explore personal preferences and learning styles and may also lead students to new modes of study. In this way, teachers will be able to play an important role in building a bridge between lexicographers and unskilled learners.
