Abstract

Reading is a taught skill that young children acquire during their primary school education. The skill needs to be practiced frequently in order to embed the learning. Part of this process is the development of reading comprehension. This skill is essential and should be given special attention. Comprehension and knowledge are fundamental pillars for development, which are part of lifelong learning. Additionally, it is also important to determine who is considered a proficient reader. The process can be long, family is the cornerstone of it, but the role of teachers is also extremely important. In addition, the relevant learning material, recommended for particular age groups, will also help to reach the required levels. In this way, a student becomes capable of experiential reading, within the areas of informative, information-gathering and task-oriented reading.
In my study, I examined the effect of the factors listed to-date, based on the answers to the open question included in the reading research conducted by the Cultural Research Workshop of the 2022 KAPOCS Research Group. The question posed was: “Suppose you hear the word 'reading'. What are the first three things that come to mind?". Students from two primary schools and two secondary schools participated in the research. After analyzing the words received from the schools, I compared the answers with each other. The basis for this was my own system of criteria, and the aspects I considered important. Based on the students' answers to the association question of reading research, it is clear that the love of reading and education to become a reader is still a priority area. Due to the impact of digital development, reading habits have changed, which is why it is necessary to examine them.
