Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is not leaving the social sciences untouched. This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the application of AI in social science research. It briefly describes the different AI algorithms, their advantages and disadvantages, highlighting key aspects (such as interpretability, transparency, predictive ability, scalability, robustness and interpretability) that determine the usefulness and effectiveness of AI in research tasks. The paper encourages researchers to carefully consider these factors when applying AI, emphasising the importance of responsible use of the technology in social science research. Artificial intelligence and machine learning tools can only be fully exploited if these aspects are properly considered and integrated into research processes.
