Values in the animated series Rick and Morty

Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory study is the qualitative examination of the values in the Rick and Morty animated series by content analysis. The questing and the transmission of the values is a constant question in the pedagogy. The values have pivotal importance in the educational process, because one of the main goals of the whole education system is the transmission of the values to the pupils. The research primarily looks for that how the values are appeared in the series. On the other hand, this research provides an opportunity to explore how animated series can be used in our education system. In a system where is getting difficult to reach the pupils for the teachers. The study is based on the Schwartz value model (2012) and additionally appears the Rokeach (1968) value model as well. The conclusion shows the dominance of values of hedonism, self-direction and stimulation, which are correlated to the value preferences of the young adults (Lányi, 2012).
Despite of the series off-handed tone it formulates sharp social criticism as well. The Rick and Morty series depicts different value systems and habits by the characters. Thus the series can be the base of numerous lessons in the secondary and tertiary education.
