Patterns of diminutivization in Costa Rican Spanish Observaciones sobre la alternancia alomórfica del sufijo -ito desde la perspectiva de nombres de marca internacionales
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to display the results of one segment of a pilot study on a somewhat strange and for that reason still unexplored area of Spanish morphophonology. It is a well-known fact that the use of evaluative (and particularly the diminutive) suffixes enjoys a great vitality in today’s Spanish. Their vitality is reflected by the regular and productive character of the application of the process. It has also been demonstrated that the choice between the allomorphs of the diminutive suffixes can be predicted by simple phonological generalizations. But what happens when native speakers must leave behind their linguistic routine and have to add a diminutive suffix to words that they rarely would summit to this mechanism (namely, international brand names)? The goal of the article is to answer this question from the point of view of Costa Rican Spanish, making use of a corpus that contains 16 international brand names and working in an analogical framework.
