Abstract

This paper sets out to outline the history of abortion during the socialist period in Hungary. The most important characteristic feature of the period is that the socialist state tried to influence the birth rate by the introduction of a compulsory system of abortion commission, while at the same time the pill, which became available from 1967, and the sexual revolution did grant women some sexual freedom and right over their body.

Tóth, Eszter Zsófia PhD, historian. Her research areas include social history
after 1945 and gender history. She has published 16 books and over 200 articles. Her main Hungarian academic publication is the book Kádár
leányai
['Kadar's Daughters'] (Nyitott Könyvműhely, 2010). She has also published in German and English. Her most important study in English is “My Work, My Family, and My Car: Women's Memories of Work, Consumerism, and Leisure in Socialist Hungary”
