The possibilities of using maps in historical research

Abstract
In historical research the maps are displayed in three ways: as illustrative tools, as historical sources and as a tool for analyzing data with spatial dimensions. Maps made in different ages can be used well in social history, economic history and various interdisciplinary areas, for example: history geography and environmental history. The development of computing has also reached cartography, digitization and GIS provide new opportunities for historians in map processing, data analysing and map making.
