Questions of In‐betweenness, Conveyance and Cultural Translation in Central‐Europe

Abstract
Hungarian novels translated into Slovenian as well as Slovenian novels translated into Hungarian equally abound in widely known rhetorical tropes, specifically encoded metaphors and „culture specifics” or cultural realia requiring special cultural and associational methods of interpretation. The understanding/translating process pre‐assumes expertise shaped by and known within a culturally defined community. These realia are often such mental, emotional, social etc. topics which have a special meaning in the given cultural context. Based on examples from selected works, in this paper I deal with the methods of translation used by Slovene and Hungarian translators, i.e. with the specific cases of translated cultural realia and with possibilities/impossibilities of translation.
