Abstract

The paper examines the geotopographical structures of the literature of classical modernism. In this period the authors describe the artefacts of the city and of the countryside. Passages, buildings, bridges, rivers play important roles in the narrative structure. The most characteristic feature is juxtaposing the highway and the city. From a theoretical perspective the question arises as to what the most important objects in the different city discourses are. The most important experience of the modern global city is the flâneur's position, and the main symbol of the special modern space of the city and the countryside is the street, the liquid and flexible communal scene.
