Abstract

King Emeric gave a wealthy donation to the Church of Nagyvárad in 1203, the two-third parts of the tributes and duties from the county Bihar. Although the donation has not remained in original issue, its content is known in synoptical transcriptions. It is not usual, that the way of the survival leads to the Chronicle of Várad too, not only to the diplomas. The Chronicle of Várad was written in 1374, and its special insertions contain the content of King Emeric's donation. In 1478 palatine Mihály Guti Országh made a verbatim transcription of two diplomas from King Louis I. (One of them was edited in 1342, the other in 1355.) Both of the Angevin royal diplomas contain the synoptical transcription of the privilege dating from 1203. The later issue from 1355 is more valuable for us, because we can follow the way of transcriptions in it. Many signs in the text show that the original, full-length text was lost in 1323. Finally, with the collation of the chronicle and the diploma, it seems that the text from 1355 could be closer to the original donation (for example it contains the restrictive elements of King Emeric's privilege).
