Abstract

The study deals with the Hungarian reform of the pension system that provides security
in old age. It explains briefly the main factors that necessitated the changes in the pension
scheme, the adverse demographic, economic and labour market processes. It summarises
the steps of reform already taken, which were taken mainly in order to be able
to finance the Hungarian pension system. It describes the new private pension scheme
introduced in 1998, the aim of which was partly to enforce individual responsibility and
self care. Also, it describes the changes in the membership of mandatory private pension
schemes, the possibilities to join them voluntarily, and the regulation on the ways
of returning to the social security pension scheme. It elaborates on the services provided
by the private pension schemes, and the options the members have who are eligible to
disabled pension. It outlines some planned changes and ideas for the future as well.
