Absztrakt
In his book about the organisation and personnel of the medieval Hungárián judicial system (A jogtudó értelmiség a Mohács előtti Magyarországon. Budapest, 1971.) György Bónis dealt in detail with the career of László Dorogházi. According to his reconstruction, Dorogházi started as a public notary, then, thanks precisely to this activity, he entered the ranks of the canons of Esztergom, after graduating as a baccalaureate at the university of Vienna. Due to his position in the chapter of Esztergom, and the support of arch-chancellor Péter Váradi, in the spring of 1484 he became prothonotary at the court of the king's personal presence, from where he was transferred to the same position in the court of the judge royal. His long career would have ended with his death in June 1502. Newly discovered sources have radically modified the picture drawn by Bónis, however. It appeared, namely, that prothonotary László had a son equally called László. This discovery made it necessary to separate the data which have hitherto all been thought to refer to the same person. The elder László, son of János, can be followed in the sources between 1454 and 1502, and remained a layman throughout. His son, László, enrolled at the university of Vienna in 1470, and can be átfested as a canon in the chapter of Esztergom from 1475 to 1489. The study examines in detail the circumstances of the elder László's joining the court of the personal presence, and tries to find the reasons for his appointment as prothonotary there. It was upon the appointment of the new judge royal in July 1500 that László Dorogházi was transferred, after sixteen years of service in his previous position, to the court of the judge royal, whose prothonotary he remained until his own death two years later.
